Translate Yoast SEO, Rank Math and other SEO plugins
WP Provider Translate works with Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress, The SEO Framework and Slim SEO. You keep setting titles, meta descriptions and other SEO settings in your SEO plugin, in your site’s own language, and WP Provider Translate translates what it puts on the page for every language. Their XML sitemaps also list the language versions of each page, so search engines find them.
What happens to your SEO plugin’s output
Whatever SEO plugin you use, WP Provider Translate reads what it adds to each page and does the following in every language:
- Title and meta description are translated.
- Social sharing tags (the title, description and image description used for link previews) are translated, and the share address and language point to the page in that language.
- Structured data (schema) is translated. Names of people, organisations and brands stay as they are.
- The canonical address points to the page in its own language.
- Language links (hreflang) are added for every language the page exists in. They follow your SEO plugin’s settings: a page set to noindex, or whose canonical points to another page, gets no language links.
- XML sitemaps list each page’s language versions.
More about how search engines see your languages in Multilingual SEO.
Yoast SEO
Yoast SEO’s titles, meta descriptions, social tags and schema are translated, the canonical points to the page in its language, and its sitemaps (such as page-sitemap.xml and post-sitemap.xml) list the language versions of every page. The sitemap index itself stays as it is.
With a domain per language, each language domain shows its own sitemap, and the sitemap line Yoast adds to robots.txt names that domain’s sitemap.
Rank Math
Rank Math works the same way as Yoast SEO: titles, meta descriptions, social tags, schema and canonical are handled in every language, and its sitemaps list the language versions of every page.
All in One SEO
All in One SEO’s titles, meta descriptions, social tags and schema are translated, the canonical points to the page in its language, and its noindex and canonical settings decide whether a page gets language links.
SEOPress
SEOPress’s titles, meta descriptions, social tags and schema are translated, the canonical points to the page in its language, and its noindex and canonical settings decide whether a page gets language links.
The SEO Framework
The SEO Framework’s titles, meta descriptions, social tags and schema are translated, the canonical points to the page in its language, and its noindex and canonical settings decide whether a page gets language links.
Slim SEO
Slim SEO’s titles, meta descriptions, social tags and schema are translated, the canonical points to the page in its language, and its noindex and canonical settings decide whether a page gets language links.
Sitemaps from any SEO plugin
A sitemap gets the language versions of its pages when its file name contains “sitemap” and ends in .xml, such as sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml or page-sitemap.xml, and it lists pages. A sitemap index, which only lists other sitemaps, is left as it is; the sitemaps it lists get the language versions. A sitemap in another format gets no language versions.
Unless a language has its own domain, there is one sitemap for all languages: an address such as yoursite.com/de/sitemap.xml leads to your main sitemap. Submit your main sitemap to search engines; you do not need one per language.
Good to know
- You set SEO once. There is no separate SEO title or description to fill in per language. They are translated from what you set in your SEO plugin.
- Only pages that exist in a language are listed. A page that is not available in a language, or not fully translated yet, is left out of that language’s language links and sitemap entries. See How translation runs.
- Translated page addresses. Page addresses (slugs) can be translated too. See Multilingual SEO.
Troubleshooting
- A translated meta description doesn’t read well. Open the page on your site, click Edit translations in the admin bar and use All texts: it lists texts you cannot click on the page. See Correct and review translations.
- A page has no language links (hreflang). Check your SEO plugin’s settings for that page: a page set to noindex, or with a canonical pointing to another page, gets none. A page that is not yet available in other languages gets none either.
- My sitemap shows no language versions. Check that the sitemap’s address ends in a file name with “sitemap” and
.xml. Open one of the sitemaps listed in the index, not the index itself. If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache.
